Ukraine nationals in Ukraine

Situations where they can apply for visas in Ukraine

Ukrainian nationals can apply for visa categories under which they would qualify in the ordinary course. This includes, but is not limited to Ukrainian nationals who are the family members of South African citizens within the second step of kinship, who qualify to apply for relatives visas, including a spouse or civil partner and an unmarried partner of more than 2 years.

Any special considerations

Although no special concessions have been granted to Ukrainian nationals, the Department of Home Affairs is assisting individuals who are unable to meet all visa requirements (e.g., producing bank statements) on a case by case basis.

If they cannot apply for visas in Ukraine, alternative options

Ordinarily one must submit their visa application in their country of origin or country of ordinary residence, although in cases of embassy closures, application to the closest operational embassy is usually allowed. The Embassy in Kyiv is closed indefinitely. The Department of International Relations and Co-operation (Dirco) are currently in the process of accrediting the embassies of South Africa in Warsaw and in the Republic of Georgia to deal with applications from Ukrainian nationals. These embassies are already assisting Ukrainian nationals with visa applications.

Non-Ukraine nationals in Ukraine

Situations where they can apply for visas in Ukraine

Persons who hold valid residence status in Ukraine are ordinarily allowed to apply to the embassy for visas, even if they are not Ukrainian nationals.

If they cannot apply for visas in Ukraine, alternative options

Persons who do not hold valid residence status in Ukraine would ordinarily not be allowed to make visa applications at the embassy in Ukraine to visit, work, study or join family in South Africa. This remains the case at present. The Embassy in Kyiv is closed indefinitely. The Department of International Relations and Co-operation (Dirco) are currently in the process of accrediting the embassies of South Africa in Warsaw and in the Republic of Georgia to deal with applications from persons who hold valid status in Ukraine. These embassies are already assisting with visa applications for non-Ukrainian nationals who hold status in Ukraine.

Options

Although visitor visa holders, including Ukrainian nationals, can renew their visitor visas for an additional 90 days in South Africa, there are no concessions to allow Ukrainian nationals in South Africa on a visitor visa to switch into another immigration route, unless they are the spouse or life partner of a South African citizen or permanent resident, or they are in need of medical treatment. Their only option would be to apply for a waiver of the requirement that visa changes be applied for abroad. If the waiver is granted they would still have to meet the requirements for the visa category under which they are applying, unless waiver of such requirements is also sought.
