Ukraine nationals in Ukraine

Situations where they can apply for visas in Ukraine

Spain has announced plans to reopen its embassy in Kyiv, but it is not yet clear whether visa services will resume.

Any special considerations

Ukrainian nationals with a biometric passport do not need a visa to enter Spain or the Schengen area. Ukrainian nationals who wish to enter Spain but do not hold a biometric passport or a travel document should go to the consular post of a bordering country to Ukraine. If a Ukrainian national does not have a passport or a travel document, the birth certificate or any document evidencing their identity can be submitted instead. Birth certificates should also be provided for minors in order to prove the relationship of the person accompanying them.

If they cannot apply for visas in Ukraine, alternative options

Spain is implementing the EU’s Temporary Protection Directive for Ukrainian nationals, which which will automatically allow displaced Ukrainians to reside, work or study in the European Union for one year, extendable up to three years, without having to apply for asylum. In addition, the Spanish government is implementing a process to allow Ukrainian nationals who resided in Ukraine before February 24, 2022, as well as Ukrainian nationals present in Spain in an irregular status prior to February 24, 2022, and who cannot return to Ukraine due to the current conflict, to live and work in Spain.
